Our Story
The Sask-Alta Baseball League was formed in 1951 by Les Benjamin, who was a CPR agent in Richmound at the time. The original six teams in the league were the Fox Valley Lions, Golden Prairie Chinooks, Hilda Cubs, Horsham Flyers, Richmound Rockets, and Schuler Tiger Cats.
In the 1950's there was senior baseball being played around the countryside but only at sportsdays, and these were money games so young kids seldom got a chance to play unless their team was short handed. With the formation of a league, this meant that young players would be given an opportunity to play and therefore build a team for future generations.
Over the past seven decades more than 30 teams have played in our league. The league has had its ups and downs throughout its history, but has survived to see ball played on the field every year thanks to deep baseball roots and the determination of countless individuals with a love for the game.
The league is currently in its 74th season and composed of five teams, the Cabri River Rats, Climax Cardinals, Gull Lake Greyhounds, Richmound Rockets and Swift Current Yard Goats.
League Rules
- League ball will be played with wood bats.
- Official game balls must be used. (Rawlings ROMLCAN)
- League games will be seven innings in length. In the event of a tie a maximum of one extra inning will be played. The last player out for each team in the previous inning will begin the extra inning on 2nd base with none out. If the score remains tied after one complete extra inning the game will officially be recorded as a tie.
- Any team that fails to appear for a scheduled game without at least four days notice shall automaticaly forfeit the game and a score of 9-0 will be recorded. An automatic fine of $100.00 shall be levied against the defaulting team and paid to the team defaulted against. Lack of players shall not be considered a sufficient reason to cancel a game.
- No player shall play in the league if they are a member of a team in another league; unless approved by league officers. Highschool players are exempt.
- The Designated Hitter (DH) rule for the Sask-Alta Baseball league will be as follows:
A (DH) can be used for any position player and must be determined prior to the game. The designated hitter may only be replaced by a player who has not entered the game. The designated hitter can move to a fielding position during the game but this move forfeits the role of (DH) for his team.
- A runner for the catcher is permitted with two out. (must be last player out)
- Team rosters (23 man cap) must be submitted by July 1st. Players must be on the roster and appear in a minimum of three games to be eligible for playoff games.
- In the event that teams finish with the same amount of points at the end of the regular season the 1st tie breaker will be wins vs. losses head to head. The 2nd tie breaker will be runs for and against head to head in the regular season. The 3rd tie breaker will be the least total runs against in the regular season.
- The regular season will be a twelve game schedule.
- The top four teams in the league will play in the league finals and the first place team will earn the right to host playoff Sunday on July 27th, 2025.
